The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RPE) has announced the ‘Call for Dean’s Committee Research Grant’ proposals for 2016.
The grant funds projects to a maximum of ksh.250,000/= per year for a maximum period of three (3) years. For more information, see the attached documents or visit the DVC (RPE) website.
A section of the Deparment of Educational Communication and Technology academic staff today attended training on Turnitin and ORCID. The training was organised by the College of Education and External Studies, UoN Library and ICT Centre. In line with the University of Nairobi's Plagiarism policy, all academic staff will be required to use the Turnitin antiplagiarism software during supervision of postgraduate students to monitor levels of plagiarism in the student's and their own research works, a reason that necissitated the training. The staff will use the ORCID tool to connect to other researchers from other institution and funders. The rest of the academic staff will attend the training tomorrow, Friday, 12/6/2016.

Teaching staff from the Department of Educational Communication and Technology led by the Chairman, Prof. Paul Odundo are currently attending a writers workshop at CCU, Main Campus. The workshop is organised by the Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CoDL). The staff are writing modules for various courses taught through the open and distance learning. The workshop will run form Monday, 2/11/2015 to Thursday, 5/11/2015.
The Centre for Pedagogy and Andragogy (CEPA) held a consultative meeting today with the teaching staff in the Department of Educational Communication and Technology. During the meeting the CEPA Director, Prof. P. O. O. Digolo briefed the department's teaching staff on the activities of the Centre. He alluded the University Management's recognition that the Department of Educational Communication and Technology has the expertise in pedagogy & andragogy and will play a pivotal role in facilitating the activities of CEPA. Details on the development of a University of Nairobi pedagogical training model for higher education teaching staff among other issues were discussed. The Chairman, ECT welcomed the collaboration plans and appealed to the members of staff to support CEPA, which is a brain-child of the department.

The Chancellor, Dr, Vijoo Rattansi officially launched the Africa Technology and Innovation Accelerator (AFTIA) on August 5th 2015. AFTIA is an incubation programme at the University of Nairobi.
Dr. Rattansi announced that AFTIA is receiving application from interested innovators. The best innovation will receive seed capital of $100,000.
The University of Nairobi has maintained its lead in the region in the just released Webometrics Ranking July 2015. UoN has been ranked positions 7 in Africa and 923 in the world, ahead of all other universities in the region. University of Cape Town was ranked first in Africa, with Stellenbosch University and University of Witwatersrand taking position two and three respectively.

The University of Nairobi held the 54th graduation ceremony on the 4th of December 2015. During this event over 8000 graduands were conferred with degrees and awards of Diplomas.
This graduation also saw 2 lecturers from the department of Educational Foundations graduate with Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Education. Dr. Lydia Njoki Wachira and Dr. Christine Muthoni Kahigi.
The Chairman; Department of Educational Foundations, Dr. Lewis Ngesu will be away on leave until the 31st of December 2015. during his leave, Mr. Julius Edalia will hold brief as the acting Chairman of the department. Dr. Ursalla Okoth will act as Associate Dean, School of Education.

Members of staff under the principal’s office held a successful team building exercise on Wednesday 29th, June 2016. The afternoon event held at the campus grounds attracted students and other members of staff from various departments in the college.
Graced by the college principal Prof. Isaac Jumba, in his remarks acknowledges the importance of a teambuilding to enhance team spirit hence meeting our objectives.
The day’s activities were conducted by a team from sports and games department; Mrs. Rose Marete and Mr. Tony Wachira.
Mr. Richard Maina well known as ‘DJ Flames’ was on the decks with some bone breaking tunes throughout the entire exercise as members participated in various activities i.e. Tag of war, football among others.

Deputy Vice chancellor, student affairs Prof. Isaac Mbeche together with director, Student welfare authority (SWA) Dr. R. Lugwe held a consultative meeting with the college management and Cees student leaders to follow up and discuss on ways on how to improve the welfare of the students living in the halls of residence after a directive that was issued by the University management that prohibits students from cooking in halls. The hostels were not structurally designed to accommodate cooking in the rooms as it overloads the power system and exposes the students and the halls to extreme danger.The Kenya Power Company has severally sent advisories to the University on the dangers of students cooking in the halls. The Univesity will ensure their is sufficent food in the dining halls and cafeterias at affordable price that will enable students to seize from cooking in the halls.
On the night of Saturday/Sunday May 14 – 15, 2016, a group of students
went on the rampage around the Halls of Residence at Main Campus to
protest against the ban on cooking in the hostels. The students destroyed
property in the kitchens and damaged equipment meant for staging a Youth
Empowerment Concert at the Chancellor’s Court.
Cooking in the hostels remains outlawed and all students must abide by the
tenancy regulations they signed upon being allocated rooms.
The University Management regrets the incident that occurred on the night
of May 14, 2016 when a group of students went on the rampage to protest
against the ban on cooking in the Halls of Residence.
The Management wishes to inform students that all academic programs
including examinations shall go on as prior planned.
All students who were to sit for exams in the week of May 16 – 20, 2016
shall continue with their exams as programmed.
The University of Nairobi has announced reporting dates for all students 2016/2017 ACADEMIC YEAR have been postponed.
All fourth year students (K.C.S.E. 2011) at the College of Education and External Studies are therefore advised NOT to report on Monday, 25th April,2016 and Monday, 30th May, 2016 as scheduled.
New reporting dates will be announced later.

Today; 1st April 2016, University of Nairobi students across all Colleges and Campuses are holding elections to elect student leaders who will lead the Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) in the next academic year. Elections are held annually at the end of the academic year.

The University of Nairobi has launched an Online Application Information System on 14th March 2016. This online system will provide a platform for self sponsored students to apply for any course offered by the University of Nairobi. The colorful event was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter M. F. Mbithi.

Staff of the College of Education and External Studies on 9th March 2016 participated in a capacity building workshop on corruption prevention, Ethics and Integrity at the QC boardroom, Kikuyu Campus.
The above elections shall be held on 17th March 2016. The elections will be supervised by the Nairobi County Labour Officer and his team in compliance with the notice issued by the Registrar of Trade Unions and in accordance with UASU constitution.
The rector of Somali National University Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Jimale visits the College to discuss how they can establish collaborations between universities, the college Principal Prof. Isaac Jumba welcomed the rector to the college and the university at large, also present during the visit were: College registrar, Mrs. Miriam Manya, Dean School of Education Prof. Winston Akala, Dr. Andrew Rasugu Riechi and the College bursar Mr. Mwangi.

The School of Continuing and Distance Education organized a 1 day seminar on PHD supervision. The seminar mainly targeted experienced PhD supervisors who have supervised PhD students in the past and who are currently supervising PhD Students. The seminar mainly sought to provide a platform for participants to share experiences as well as listen to presentations by various speakers highlighting the new supervision requirements set by the University of Nairobi as well as share challenges and way forward.
Department of Extra mural Studies in the School of Continuing and distance education, College of Education and External Studies held a stakeholders meeting at central catering unit to discuss matters concerning the new curriculum developed for masters programmes: Masters of Science in project financing and Masters of Science in project monitoring and Evaluation to meet the demand in the market.
