UoN Ranked among world’s Top 250 Universities by Times Higher Education (THE)

The University of Nairobi has ranked position 1 in the region and position 3 in Africa in the just released Times Higher Education (THE) University Rankings 2018. The University has registered an improved performance in teaching environment, research environment, citation impact and international outlook. Globally; The University of Nairobi was placed in 201-250 category that with an overall score of 19.9–25.0.

This year’s rankings included 250 world’s best young universities, up from 200 in 2017. From the list, only seven best Universities from Africa were ranked. South Africa’s University of KwaZulu-Natal was number 1 in Africa and 83 globally with an overall score of 43.2. Second place was a tie between Beni-Suef University (Egypt) and the University of Johannesburg who had an overall score of 33.2–40.0 and the two were placed on the category of 101–150 in the world rank.

Further, the ranking indicates that UoN was the only university to be ranked in Kenya and East Africa in the Times Higher Education (THE) list that ranked the world’s best universities that are aged 50 years or under.

THE Young University Rankings assesses research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. It uses 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments. The performance indicators are grouped into five broad areas: Teaching (the learning environment), Research (volume, income and reputation), Citations (research influence), International outlook (staff, students and research) and Industry income (knowledge transfer).

UoN’s Vice- Chancellor Prof. Mbithi congratulated the University community for the achievement. He said this performance is a reflection of the true spirit and philosophy of the University of Nairobi. He promised that the University community shall continue to work together towards global excellence.
